Minton chamberstick
A rare, large and stunning Minton chamberstick with ornate ring handle and finely gilt scrolled edge detail to both base and sconce, the rich dark blue ground with fine gilt caillouté decoration and two reserves of brightly coloured exotic birds in landscapes, all within borders of raised, tooled and feathered gilding. The fine painting attributed to Joseph Wareham and the gilding, which even by Minton standards is exceptional, to John Robins.
Unmarked but see Geoffrey Godden " Minton 1793-1850" Plate 25 for a dejeuner set made for Queen Victoria and now in the Royal Collection also attributed to Joseph Wareham with gilding by John Robins.
Date: Circa 1840
Width: 4 1/4 inches (10.5cm) Height: 2 1/2 inches (6.25 cm)
Condition: Professional restoration to small firing flaw at the base of the sconce otherwise extremely good. Any apparent wear, particularly to the sconce, is solely from reflections; in reality the gilding in these areas is crisp, clean and unworn.
