Minton chamberstick
A very good Minton chamberstick with ornate ring handle and finely gilt scrolled edges to both base and sconce, the rich dark blue ground with fine gilt caillouté decoration and two reserves of brightly coloured exotic birds in landscapes, all within ornate raised, tooled and feathered gilding, the painting attributed to Joseph Wareham. The gilding, even by Minton standards is exceptional.
Unmarked but see G. Godden " Minton 1793-1850" Plate 25 for a dejeuner set with very similar decoration, made for Queen Victoria, also painted by Joseph Wareham and now in the Royal Collection.
Date: Circa 1840
Width: 4 1/4 inches (10.5cm) Height: 2 1/2 inches (6.25 cm)
Condition: Professional restoration to small firing flaw at the base of the sconce otherwise extremely good. Any apparent wear, particularly to the sconce, is purely from reflections; the gilding in these areas in reality is extremely crisp and clean.
