Set of six signed Brown-Westhead Moore & Co. dessert plates

A highly decorative set of six Brown-Westhead Moore & Co dessert plates made for the American market, each with lobed, gadrooned rims enhanced with gilding, fine bands of gilt beading and hanging gilt pendants. Each plate well painted with landscapes of British castles and stately houses, Rhuddlan Castle, Warwick Castle, Haddon Hall, Kenilworth Castle, Bothwell Castle and Windsor Castle, each signed J. Ellis. Each plate also named to the reverse together with pattern number B8769D, the Royal Coat of Arms, Potters to Her Majesty and the initials  J, McD & S  Co. for the American company Jones, McDuffee & Stratton Co. of Boston, Mass.

The talented and respected painter John Ellis was employed by Brown-Westhead Moore throughout the 1880's and 1890's. His work was shown at numerous prestigious exhibitions including the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1889.

The firm of Brown-Westhead Moore & Co. (1861-1904) were direct successors to the old established and important porcelain manufacturers Ridgway. They produced extremely high quality wares for, amongst many others, the British Royal Family, the Russian Imperial Family and top American retailers  such as Tiffany New York.
